Of course you must not miss out Maceys where there is always a sale on or the very expensive Bloomingdales. At the time of writing the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum was closed for refurbishment but should be open by the fall of 2008, once the refurbishment is complete it will be worth visiting when it re-opens. There is a great deal there with the USS Intrepid taking center stage being a Second World War aircraft carrier but there is a Concorde and other underwater vessels there too.

The real New York City Police Museum is open for visitors and while admission is free; donations are expected of around five dollars to help with running it, it contains a great deal of information about the World famous Police Department and you can buy souvenirs too.

The Lower East Side also has a very large time capsule called The Lower East Side Tenement Museum which captures the lives of immigrants to New York back in 1864 Then it is worth seeing some of the older history of New York back when there were huge numbers of migrants entering the city and the Lower East Tenement was where most of them ended up which is now a museum and a time capsule.

One museum not mentioned a great deal is the City of New York Museum on Central Park that houses images and objects of the past (and present) in an exhibition that is constantly changing. The building’s pretty grand and the shop sells quality souvenirs and while admission to this venue is free, a nine dollar donation is recommended. Perhaps as with any capital city, a short vacation in New York really is only enough to give you a taste of what it has to offer, still that just means to will have to spend more time there in the future!
