Maine Vacation in Camden, Maine
There aren’t many spots on the East Coast where the mountains meet the ocean. Camden, Maine is one of them. If you want a vacation where you can hike the mountains and sail the waters, Camden is right for you. The best part is there a variety of inns, hotels and resorts that offer Maine vacation packages all along the coast. For example, the Sebasco Harbor Resort in Sebasco, Maine offers a family friendly resort on 550 oceanfront acres on the coast of Maine with great deals on vacation packages. The hotel is an authentic Maine vacation resort with breathtaking views and a wealth of activities the entire family can enjoy.
Located just over an hour north of Portland, Camden is one of those quaint New England towns filled with beautiful homes, the feel of the ocean and nature’s beauty at every turn. Look in one direction and you see the mountains, turn around and the harbor with the ocean beyond beckons you.
Originally called Megunticook by the Abenaki Indians, Camden is nestled on Penobscot Bay with Mt. Battie stretching upwards to the West. Camden is called the Jewel of the Maine Coast. It is less than 26 square miles, was settled in the 1770s and incorporated in 1791, when it became a thriving shipbuilding town.
Camden offers a variety of activities. A short walk from downtown brings you to Camden Hills State Park, home to a variety of trails that offer up day hikes and panoramic views of the coastline. During the summer, you can pick wild blueberries and snack your way to the top of the trail! Or take a ferry to an area island and walk the perimeter. Fall is a great time for apple picking in a local orchard or bicycling the area to take the beauty of the trees in their autumn majesty.
With Mt. Battie in the neighborhood, Camden also has its own snow bowl. If you visit in winter, you can take in ocean views from the snow bowl as you navigate the trails. The area also hosts the toboggan nationals and a variety of year-round activities. Not a skier? Several area lakes provide outdoor skating – pack a thermos of hot chocolate and lace-up!
There are many other activities offered by the town. Be sure to check with the Chamber of Commerce to see what is on tap for your visit!
